NYC

After packing up our house, storing it, shipping some stuff, and living with family for a week, we are now in our new place in New York City. It doesn't quite feel like home yet, but I'm sure it will over time. We arrived yesterday, and I'll admit I'm a bit overwhelmed by the city and the culture and lifestyle shock of NYC. We woke up early to catch our flight at 8:55, arrived in NYC at 1:30. By the time we got our baggage(2 big duffle bags, a car seat, a pac-n-play, 2 backpacks, a suitcase, and a diaper bag--a little tricky to carry by ourselves--we ended up having to rent a cart at the airport) and took our 1st taxi ride to our apartment it was around 3. We were starving so we decided to explore and find a restaurant. I ate pizza and S. ate a calzone(N. practically half a box of cheerios throughout the day!) We then headed off to Ikea to pick up some much needed items. Getting to Ikea was quite the adventure. We first had to buy a metro card to get on the subway, then figure out which train to get on. We got on one train, and it got us in the right direction, but not close enough. We were looking at the map trying to figure it out when a nice man asked us if we needed help. He told us which train should get us there. So then we get off the subway, and start walking towards the pier to where the free water taxi takes us to Ikea. After walking a little while, we realized we were walking the opposite direction, so after walking a lot more, and N. taking a much needed nap in his stroller, we finally arrived at the water taxi. We took that to Ikea, got 2 big blue ikea bags full of stuff, and then headed home--this time was much easier--we took the water taxi, walked a little ways, then got on the subway that took us really close to home. So we get home about 7ish from Ikea, and then needed to get groceries. Since it's already late and we're tired by this point, we just go across the street to a grocery store called Gristedes. I was shocked the the prices of groceries. It just killed me to spend 70 bucks on milk, sandwich stuff, a few snacks for N., and some soap--that same amount of food would have cost me around $30 at Kroger in Dallas! Can you believe a box of cheerios was $6, a dozen eggs were $5(I didn't get these), a jar of mayo was $7, and a gallon of milk was $5--I don't plan on going there again. Anyways, I'm going to have to find somewhere cheaper or we're just going to starve!!! We finally got back home for good at around 8. N. who had mostly sat on my lap or in his stroller all day, was so excited to be put down. He walked around our whole apartment just laughing and playing. It was so cute, and made me feel a whole lot better after such an exhausting and a bit overwhelming 1st day in the city.

  1. Good Luck in New York.

Y'all need to buy this map: http://www.amazon.com/New-York-Popout-Map/dp/1841393908

It fits in your pocket, pops up to read and has the subway routes on it. I have one for NYC and one for Dallas.
